Even the most experienced captains will have an anchor drag on them every once in a while.
It’s easy to fix a dragging anchor; although fixing it after you’ve slid into boat or breakwater is a bit more frustrating.
One of my favorite hacks to monitor the anchor hold is using the multi-function display with tracking.
Set your anchor, zoom in, and you will get a clear view of how the boat is swinging on its hold; once you see a track that goes past the general tendency of the swing, you should start monitoring and take action if necessary.
On a related note, the anchor alarm feature of many displays is handy as well. These do need to be adjusted based on anchor scope, but using the duo of a visual and audio monitor can only help prevent an accident slide into a vessel behind you.
