I used to hate provisioning plastic water bottles.
The cases are heavy, the packaging is wasteful, it was an every 3rd week chore to get them from Costco (a place I appreciate but don’t necessarily enjoy visiting), and they take up precious storage space.
On a boat, it’s imperative to have safe, potable water for all onboard!
With a ~70 gallon water tank that is easily refilled at the dock, I figured there has to be a way to use the boat’s water for drinking to stop the madness.
And there is. During the off season, I installed a PUR water filter onto the galley faucet, and I couldn’t be happier.
The water is yummy and free of any mineral taste. I’m no longer lugging cases of bottles down the dock. Hundreds of used plastic bottles no longer need to be recycled, so we’re saving energy. It’s much easier to fill the Nespresso machine. And there has to be money savings, although I view that as the least valuable benefit.
I do still keep a few gallons of water near the emergency gear and life boat, just in case something goes down (i.e. the boat). This is especially important if you boat in salt water.
Bottom line: get yourself a water filter and your life will be easier.
